Le 4 avril 1968, Martin Luther King mourait, assassiné.
Récemment, le magazine L'Histoire de mars 2008, a fait paraître un article de couverture sur Martin Luther King Jr, «Martin Luther King - un rêve américain », à l'occasion des 40 ans de l'assassinat du pasteur baptiste américain à Memphis.
Ca été l'occasion pour moi de me remémorer deux livres que j'avais lu il y a quelques années et qui sont paru aux Editions Bayard. L'un étant une biographie du pasteur américain et l'autre consistant en un recueil de sermons titré « Minuit, quelqu'un frappe à la porte ». Martin Luther King Jr n'a pas nécessairement été reconnu pour être en grand théologien, mais son engagement en faveur des Droits Civiques des noirs américains l'on rendu largement populaire à travers le monde. Un engagement qui a été couronné par l'obtention du Prix Nobel de la Paix en 1965. Cet engagement a revêtu une dimension internationale, d'autant plus, qu'après l'obtention des Droits Civiques pour les noirs américains en 1965, son combat a pris une tournant plus largement social.
Le livre retrace, au travers de ses sermons, les valeurs qu'a défendues Martin Luther King Jr et constitue une source brûlante de réflexion dans un monde globalisé, souvent d'un matérialisme extrême et aux injustices si criantes.

The 4th of April 1968, Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated in Memphis.
Recently, a French history magazine, for the 40th anniversary of the assassination of this American Baptist pastor, has put him on its front cover: "Martin Luther King - an American dream".
It has reminded me about two books I read few years ago. The first one was a biography of Martin Luther King Jr. For the other, you just have to read the title to guess what it is about: "A Knock at Midnight: Inspiration from the Great Sermons of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.", edited by Clayborne Carson and Peter Holloran in association with Warner Books.
Martin Luther King, Jr wasn't necessarly an important theologian. He is well-known for his Civil Rights‘s fight in the USA and his engagement against racism. In 1965, the black community in the USA obtained the right to vote. The same year, Martin Luther King, Jr, as a recompense for his fight, received the Nobel Prize for Peace. Later, his fight will have taken a more universal and social direction before his assassination in 1968.
The book, "A Knock at Midnight", through the Martin Luther King's predications, shows us the values behind the fight lead by this pastor. It also gives rise to some fresh reflections about the World's globalization, his extreme materialism that leads to a huge gap between the poor and the rich.
